Free Academic ServicesSept. 8-11, 2014, the Rutgers Learning Centers is hosting Welcome Week.  During this time, the centers are offering a variety of FREE workshops on all four campuses to help you to start the semester on the right foot.  There will be refreshments, giveaways, and opportunities to schedule Writing and Academic Coaching Appointments when you visit any of our centers.

RU a Successful Student

Tues., Sept. 9, 6:30-7:30 p.m., C/D: Loree Building, Room 124

Discover the top 10 attributes of the successful Rutgers student.  Learn how to stop studying and start learning so you can face the fear of difficult courses.  You will be able to immediately implement specific study strategies taught at the workshop. At the end of the presentation, you will understand how to set SMART goals for the fall semester and your entire academic career.

Do you enjoy studying with others?  Have you heard about the benefits of group studying, but don’t know where to start?  Do you study with friends, but want to learn how to do it more effectively?  If you answered, yes to any of these questions, this workshop is for you.  Students who study collaboratively have higher academic achievement, greater long-term retention, better problem solving abilities, and increased persistence and motivation.  Also, individuals who study collaboratively have decreased anxiety and stress and increased self-esteem.  Come learn how to make studying more enjoyable and improve your overall academic performance through learning collaboratively.

Strategic Note Taking

This workshop will explore strategic methods for taking useful lecture notes.  You will learn the difference between listening vs. hearing, how to watch your professor’s body language, and to listen to your professor’s tone and pitch to determine the most important message of the lecture.  Several note-taking methods will be discussed that can assist you in developing lecture notes that can impact your academic success.

Learn add/drop tactics for successful academic planning.  Rutgers University professional staff will be on hand to help you to discover how you can use add/drop to secure the classes that you need.  Hear from the pros how to manage add/drop and get answers to any lingering questions so you can use add/drop to your advantage each semester.

Time Management Tactics

In this interactive workshop, you will begin planning a balanced study schedule that will allow you to have time for stress relief.  The goal of this workshop is to teach you how to plan ahead and plan wisely to keep the important tasks from becoming urgent.  A systematic and an attitude-based method for managing your priorities will be discussed.  

Scholarship Application Essays

The first of a three-part workshop series; this interactive workshop will teach you how to write high-impact personal statements and strong project proposals for scholarship applications.  You will learn about scholarship opportunities, practice persuasive writing skills, strengthen your writing by increasing clarity and organization, and develop a unique voice that will make your essay stand out to reviewers.
