Service Jenny typifies the caliber of Rutgers Learning Centers peer leaders:  distinguished academic achievement, enthusiasm for learning, and a deep and abiding commitment to helping her fellow students. As a first-year student, Jenny mentored newly admitted first-year students enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Fund Summer Program and tutored MATLAB. Join us on May 17th for a day focused on active learning. From 9am to 3pm on Livingston Campus there will be talks, presentations, panels, demonstrations, and workshops tailor made for Rutgers faculty and staff who are using or interested in using active learning techniques. This spring break marked a milestone for the LCs as we prepared for the PA/NJ College Reading and Learning Association's annual conference.  All of our full-time staff members except for one were able to attend the conference, including two of our part-time academic coaches. The informative sessions presented throughout the day—marketing, assessment, tutoring techniques, civility in the tutoring context, and how to form valuable partnerships across campus—pushed us to reflect upon and broaden our understanding of our own services and how we can best support student learning on the New Brunswick Campus as we move forward into the summer and new academic year. Karen awoke early each morning to a rooster’s crow; watched monkeys stealthily steal food from tourists at a national park; visited various and uniquely gorgeous beaches; and marveled at the ash and tremors from the eruption of Volcano Turrialba —all while studying abroad in Costa Rica in the Spring of 2015. Karen, a Rutgers Future Scholar and recipient of both the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and the Center for Global Education’s Diversity Scholarship, studied cinema and history last spring at San Jose University, where all of her courses were taught in Spanish.
