Academic Skills

Academic Coaching
Improve your academic performance with the help of an academic coach. This program is open to all students seeking better self-management skills, reading and test-preparation strategies, and public speaking and memory techniques.

In addition to improving your academic skills, learning center staff also are available to conduct assessments and referrals if you suspect you may have a learning disability or attention disorder.

Please contact a learning center at least 24 hours in advance to schedule your appointment.

Study Groups
Offered in cooperation with professors of a select number of difficult courses, study group sessions assist students in mastering difficult course material while increasing comprehension of discipline concepts. Group leaders review the course material with students, as well as integrate study strategies—like note taking, problem solving, and test preparation—that link course content with cognitive skill development in an interactive small group environment.

Study group participants earn significantly higher average finalcourse grades than if they simply studied alone. They are also more actively involved in the course, are guaranteed more study time, have a better understanding of course material, acquire efficient learning strategies, and on average earn higher grades in the course than students in the same course who do not attend the study group sessions.

Contact a learning center to take part in a study group.

Please note: Study group leaders are trained and supervised Rutgers students selected by the course professor; they are not course instructors and are present only to facilitate a study session.

Speed-Reading
Do speed-reading courses really work? The average college student reads between 250 and 350 words per minute on fiction and nontechnical material. People who purport to read between 10,000 and 25,000 words per minute are actually skimming, not comprehending, what they read. The only real way to improve reading speed is by building study skills, recognition vocabulary, and reading comprehension. Read some tips on how to improve your speed-reading skills, or make an appointment with an academic coach.

Preparing for Multiple-Choice Exams
Multiple-choice exams and reading strategies are closely related. Ideally, you want to study the material most likely to appear on the exam, while eliminating time spent memorizing less essential information.
